Aegis

When thinking of the word of the week, aegis, I was partial to one of the definitions given by the the Merriam-Webster dictionary:

Control or guidance especially by an individual, group, or system.


When taking this look at the word, immediately I think of a teacher/mentor, or in my case a foreign language teacher. As teachers, we have the majority of control in our students' language learning. Sure, students can seek out other means to learn a language (books, movies, music, etc); however, instruction in a classroom is (hopefully) the most accurate way to learn a language. As teachers, we fit all three categories of this guidance and control. We have individual times with all students both in and out of the class. As a whole, we work as a group to ensure the language learning as a department. Finally, all languages come together as a system to enrich and enlighten the students to the world I which they live.








Another way of looking at this word with language would be a native speaker from any country respectively. To a foreigner, they are your guide to experiencing the language and culture from that country. I know what I have done before with friends that are native speakers from other countries, we both help each other out when needed to remember words or learn new terms. For me at least, it's fun and exciting to be opened up to a new world. Without this guide or control, this task would be much harder to accomplish. Now my question is, have any of you found yourself in either of these scenarios?

  2. Good one Randi! I absolutely loooove spending time with people from other countries. It makes it feel like a little bit of the world came to you. (it's also why I have began learning, and stopped learning over half a dozen different languages) Struggling across the language barrier with new speakers is an incredibly rewarding challenge while discussing culture with more advanced speakers is always a great joy.

    1. I agree Daniel ,it is more rewarding than anything I have ever done. It may be "nerdy" but I find it such a fun game to try and figure out what foreigners are saying or to figure out the fun little words they mistake for the correct translation, just as I assume I would do in their language.

  3. Great job Randi, Protecting students can be done in different ways relating to Foreign language. The Teacher need to be in control of the class by maintaining order and protecting students from distraction from others who are not in the class. How do we deal with students who disrupts their classmates by talking, not paying attention, texting in class. This act can affects other studends who want to pay attentionto what is being said.

  4. Nii, I completely agree, the teacher needs to be in complete control of things; however also needs to have a softer side. How we deal with students who are disruptive....I have been asking myself that for a long time. It depends on how disruptive they are, what they are doing, and how long they have been doing it. You are right, it can be very disruptive, not only to the other students but to the classmates as well. If this is the case, we all know that is entirely unacceptable.

  5. I'm not sure that I would be so quick to lump all native speakers of a language into a category that serves to protect the learning of a language. You would have to assume that all speakers of english, for example, care about teaching the language, speak english language goodly (that's a joke), and have relationships with people that are learning english as a second language. I think it's safer to say that speakers of a language HAVE THE POTENTIAL to exercise powerful aegis in the language arts. Not to be a pot stirrer...you also cannot assume that all teachers take their job as seriously as you or Dr. Jones. I wish we could say that about all language instructors, but we can't. Maybe someday, under YOUR protective aegis, you'll be able to make a huge difference in the language learning community!

  6. Very good.... control in the classroom, the Teacher is the Aegis of the class...either as a lecturer or a facilitator.... Yes, the softer side is important too!! Good job all...
